One of the more unusual aspects of the Decent Espresso ecosystem is that the machine is not tied to a single control app. Because Decent exposes its software and machine interfaces openly, independent developers have been able to build their own applications for running the DE1.

These third-party apps are not simply different visual skins. Many introduce their own ideas about how espresso should be controlled, how profiles and recipes should be organized, how shot data should be presented, and which external devices should be supported. Depending on the app, the emphasis may be on real-time control, simplified workflows, accessibility, native mobile performance, data analysis, or deeper integration with scales and other coffee hardware.
