Despresso is a third-party control application for the Decent Espresso DE1, created as a native app for iOS and Android using Flutter. The project began as an independent community effort rather than an official Decent Espresso application, with the goal of providing a modern mobile interface for operating the machine and managing espresso-related data. It controls your DE1 and offers a different take on espresso recipes and workflows.

What it is

It's a native app written by Markus in Germany, available for iPhone, iPad, and Android.

It's an open-source project you can participate in (and sponsor), hosted on GitHub, where bug/feature reporting and release tracking also happen.

It's officially available through the App Store and Google Play, so there's at least some Apple/Google approval behind it.

You can sideload it on the Decent tablet, since that tablet doesn't have an app store installed.

How it differs

It covers most of what the default app does, but in a different visual way, with some different concepts.

Its recipes look like workflows and involve things like grind and dose, not just the profile.

It runs "native" as compiled Android or iOS code.

It aims to support other hardware (BLE thermometer, refractometer, scales) faster when access to the hardware is available, and experimenting with new concepts is easier because it's built on a modern framework.

A major part of Despresso is its recipe concept. Rather than treating an espresso profile as the complete description of a drink, the app separates the machine's brewing profile from information about the coffee being prepared. A recipe can associate a profile with a particular bean, target weight, temperature adjustment and other preparation information. Ratio handling was subsequently added so that the user can enter a dose and desired brew ratio and have Despresso calculate the target output weight automatically.

The app keeps its own local shot database, referred to as the Espresso Diary or shot database. Shots can be stored together with information about beans, profiles and recipes. The project also introduced a coffee/bean database containing information such as roast date, bean name and ratings. Shot information can be uploaded to Visualizer.coffee, and the developers discussed improving filtering so users could search their history by bean, recipe or profile.

In other words. Despresso's approach is to combine direct DE1 control, scale integration, profiles, recipes, shot history and coffee data in a native mobile application designed specifically around the Decent Espresso workflow.
