Streamline is the default skin of Decaid, Decent's new app for your espresso machine. Decaid looks after the Bluetooth/USB connection, your scale, your profiles and your shot history. Streamline is the screen you actually touch.
The goal hasn't changed since the first Streamline: "one tap to do everything you normally need to". Simplicity and speed.
The original Streamline skin was designed by Pulak and programmed by John for the classic DE1 app, inspired by Johanna's MimojaCafe. The new Streamline is a ground-up rewrite for Decaid, developed by Mark Chau with the Decaid team and community contributors. It keeps the classic layout and adds a lot.
Still using the classic DE1 app? The last section of this guide, "Streamline in the classic DE1 app", is for you.
Streamline comes with Decaid and is its default skin, so there is nothing to install. Open Decaid, connect to your machine, and Streamline is what you see.
The first time you run Decaid on a tablet that already has the classic DE1 app, it offers to import your settings, profiles, shot history, beans and grinders. Say yes.
A few things worth knowing:
Streamline uses two gestures, everywhere:
For example, long-press a brew temperature preset and you can apply it, type a new value, save your current temperature into it, or put it back to its original value:
Values with − and + step up and down when you tap them. Tap the number itself to type an exact value on a full-screen number pad. The number pad also lists values you've used before, so you can jump back to a dose or temperature that worked.
Don't remember what something does? Tap the round ? button in the bottom-right corner. Every control on the screen labels itself. Tap anywhere to close it. If the ? button is in your way, long-press it to hide it.
The help overlay also works on the profile list, the profile editor and the settings screen.
Everything you need to make espresso is on one page:
The line under the profile name shows the water temperature, the steam heater temperature, your water tank level and the time. While a shot is running, the puck temperature is shown too. On the right is the machine's state (for example Ready, Heating or Sleep) and your scale's weight. Tap the weight to tare the scale.
If your scale isn't connected, Streamline shows a scanning icon while it looks for it, or Retry if it gave up. Tap Retry to look again.
If you have a refill kit and it stops while there is still water to fill, the status line shows Retry. Tap it to ask the refill kit to try again.
Sleep puts your machine to sleep, and Streamline shows its screen saver. Tap the screen saver to wake the machine.
The left-hand column is where you set up your next espresso.
36g (1:2.0). With a Bluetooth scale connected, the shot stops when it reaches this weight.Under each row is a strip of grey presets. Tap one to use it. Long-press one to edit it, save your current value into it, or reset it.
Your grind, dose, drink and brew temperature are remembered for each profile, so when you go back to a profile, it comes back the way you last used it.
The steps to pulling a shot:
While a shot is running, the status line shows the name of the current profile step. Tap it to skip to the next step.
If you've switched on Scale Required (Settings → Connections → Scale), the machine won't start a shot until your scale is connected.
The five buttons along the top are your favourite profiles. Tap one to load it.
Long-press a favourite to edit that profile, replace it with another profile, or clear the button:
Replace with (or a long-press on an empty button) opens your profile list: choose a profile and confirm, and it goes into that button. You can also long-press a profile in the profile list and assign it to a favourite from there.
If you use DYE2 (Describe Your Espresso 2), Streamline can show your DYE2 recipes and auto-favourites in the same top strip. DYE2 is a Decaid plugin, and it's off in Streamline until you turn it on: Settings → Extensions → Describe Your Espresso → DYE2.
When DYE2 is on, the top bar changes:
A recipe holds everything for one drink: profile, dose, drink weight, grind, temperature, and your steam, hot water and flush settings. Tap a recipe button to load all of it in one go. The R strip shows the same recipes as DYE2's own recipe strip.
Long-press a recipe or favourite button for more: Edit in DYE2, Save changes (keep what you've adjusted since you loaded it), Replace it with another recipe from your library, Save to recipes, or Clear button. Long-press an empty recipe button to pick a recipe for it or save your current settings there.
For everything else about DYE2, see the DYE2 guide.
Tap the profile name (or the arrows button next to it) to open your profile list. Tap the pencil button to edit the loaded profile.
The editor has three tabs: step cards, a plain-words script view with a chart preview, and the profile-wide settings. Tap any value to change it, or use − and +. Tap the title to rename the profile. Each profile also has its own notes page.
When you save:
After saving, you're taken back to the main screen. CLOSE discards your changes and takes you back to where you were.
The Steam row on the main screen shows your steam time (big number) and steam flow (small number). Tap the little Time | Flow switch under the word Steam to choose which one the −/+ buttons change. The grey presets give you sensible times or flow rates.
Tap the word Steam to open the steam settings page (Settings → Quick Adjustments → Steam).
If you don't steam milk, turning the steam heater off saves electricity and gets your machine from off to ready faster.
There's no longer an "infinite" steam setting: steam always stops on its own, after the time you set (or, on a Bengle with a milk probe, when the milk reaches your target temperature).
If the Auto Steam Calculator plugin is installed, the steam row also offers an Auto mode that works out the steam time for each pitcher.
Hot Water shows the volume (big number) and temperature (small number). The Temp | Vol switch chooses which one you're changing. With a Bluetooth scale connected, the scale is used to measure the water precisely. Tap the words Hot Water to open its settings page, where you'll also find the duration, the flow rate (1 to 10 ml/s), Stop at Weight (needs a scale) and a flow multiplier (higher stops the water sooner).
Flush sets how long the group flushes for. The presets give you typical times.
Start hot water or a flush from the GHC, or with the Water and Flush buttons if your machine has no GHC.
Between shots, the chart shows your most recent espresso, so you always have something to compare against. During a shot it draws live:
Each line is labelled at its right-hand end, so there's no legend to look up. Temperature is drawn at a tenth of its value so it fits on the same scale: a line at 9 means 90ºC.
Tap the chart to see it full screen. The settings column and the shot summary are hidden, and your next-shot settings move into a line of text above the chart, from grind and dose through to hot water. Tap the chart again to go back.
Under the chart is the summary of the shot on screen, split into preinfusion, extraction and total, with time, weight, volume, temperature, flow and pressure.
- Discuss with Derek: ask Decent's AI assistant about this shot. Derek opens inside the app with your shot already attached.
- Copy Shot Summary: copies a text summary of the shot.
- Upload to Visualizer: if you've signed in to visualizer.coffee in the Visualizer plugin.
- With the dial-in assistant plugin installed, extra choices appear here such as picking the coffee for your next shot.
Tap Settings on the main screen. Categories run down the left, with their pages next to them. There's a search box: type a word to find any setting. Tap SAVE or CANCEL at the top right when you're done.
A few settings worth knowing about:
Found a bug, or have an idea? Go to Settings → User Manual → Send Feedback.
Your feedback becomes a public issue on GitHub, so don't include any personal or private information.
This section is for the original Streamline skin in the classic DE1 app (de1app). If you use Decaid, everything above applies to you instead. For the classic app itself, see the DE1 App Quickstart Guide.
The classic Streamline skin, designed by Pulak and programmed by John, was inspired by Johanna's MimojaCafe. Though it might look minimalist, it took 14 months for Pulak and John to complete: simplicity is difficult!
Here is what the two variations look like:
Note that you can also set a profile favorite from the "PRESETS" tab by tapping one of the 1-2-3-4-5 buttons on the bottom left of that page.
Long press the SLEEP button to exit the DE1app. A short tap will put the DE1 to sleep.
If you enable the DYE extension, a DYE button will appear:
Streamline has a simpler visual mode, where the controls on the left, and the data on the bottom, are hidden.
Tap on the chart to cycle between Zoomed and Normal modes:
The top line shows you vital statistics, including the currently loaded profile, whether your DE1 is heating, current time, your water tank level, and current weight. If your bluetooth scale is not connected, tap [Reconnect].
Since the Zoomed mode does away with the left-hand-side controls, the data line in Zoomed mode has two lines, to show you the vitals you've now hidden:
If you enable the Graphical Flow Calibrator extension, you can easily set a flow calibration setting for each profile you use.
Tapping the "Calib" value will show you Graphical Flow Calibrator:
Your past espresso shots are displayed on the chart. You can cycle between them by tapping the arrows next to the word HISTORY. Long press the arrow to go the oldest or most recent espresso.
The data chart breaks your espresso into 3 stages: preinfusion, extraction, and total.
Explanation of the above chart:
Everywhere in Streamline, you can tap on a number:
and type using a full-screen keyboard:
You can +/-, or enter a temperature, for your espresso brew temperature. Every step will be adjusted to the relative change. For example, if your espresso starts at 92ºC and then drops to 88ºC, and you change the temperature to 90ºC, then the ending temperature will be reduced by -2ºC.
Tap a preset temperature to load it, or long tap on a preset temperature to save your current temperature to that preset.
Typically useful steam times are given in the presets. Tap the Time | Flow label to switch between editing each.
A steam time of zero will turn the steam heater off, to lower your electrical consumption and speed up the time-from-off-to-ready.
Sensible steam flow rates are given in the presets:
You can set the flush time, hot water temperature and water volume dispensed. If you have a bluetooth scale attached, it is used to give you a precise water volume.
