The internal components of a Decent Espresso machine are directly equivalent to what you would find in a high-end traditional commercial machine, such as a La Marzocco Linea Mini. Both styles of machines feature the same basic arrangement of commercial-grade motherboards, valves, and pumps. Because Decent relies on commercial parts rather than consumer-grade materials, there is no inherent engineering reason for a Decent machine to have a shorter lifespan than a traditional commercial counterpart.
Calcification from calcium buildup is by far the biggest failure point for espresso machines. Traditional boilers present the worst-case scenario because they continuously heat stationary cold water, forcing calcium to precipitate and sink directly to the bottom. Decent combats this by cycling the water during initial startup, causing calcium powder to drop out safely at the bottom of the removable water tank instead of inside the heating elements, allowing users to simply pour the loose powder out when cleaning the tank. Please note that we still urge users to use distilled or bottled water to make coffee, thus avoiding eventual mineral buildups in the machine.
Traditional espresso machines use rigid, welded, or soldered metal tubes that tightly bond with calcium and undergo immense stress from expanding and contracting during thermal cycling. Decent uses a quick-connect standard originally invented by Nespresso, featuring a floating metal-encased sleeve and an O-ring. When there is no pressure, the connector stays loose and slack, letting the parts move and twist freely as the machine cools down without causing stress fractures. When pressure builds up, the connection automatically self-seals. As an added safety bonus, Decent upgrade these standard plastic molded connectors to metal click connectors to completely prevent cracking near the heaters.
Many traditional machines place their printed circuit boards (PCBs) in areas prone to heat and condensation. For example, the La Marzocco GS3 famously suffers from a design where rising moisture condenses against the top casing and drips down onto the exposed PC board, frying it. Furthermore, keeping standard electronics above 60°C drastically degrades their lifespan from 20 years down to about 3 years. Decent solves this by completely isolating their pcbs inside a metal casing utilizing positive air pressure to pump fresh air into the compartment, driving out all ambient heat and moisture. The boards are also treated with a protective conformal spray coating to completely block out dust and water.
Decent intentionally engineers their machines to be exceptionally user-serviceable. Every internal tube is color-coded to indicate its length and purpose, and replacement parts are highly standard. If a minor part like the pressure sensor fails, it requires removing just four bolts and unplugging a standard electronic connector—a repair that takes roughly three minutes. Because of this highly modular design, it is incredibly rare for a machine to need to be shipped back to Decent; instead, the company simply mails out a plug-and-play part for the user to swap out themselves.
Android and Apple tablet devices naturally have a median useful life of around two to three years before their internal batteries begin to swell or decline. To make sure a decaying tablet doesn't ruin the entire espresso machine, Decent intentionally designed the interface to sit fully detached. When the tablet eventually needs to be replaced, users don't have to replace or service the espresso machine itself; they can simply buy a new tablet from Amazon or Decent, pair it over Bluetooth, and instantly resume using the machine.
