While your HDS is built to withstand the occasional splash of water that happens at a coffee bar, it remains a high-precision electronic instrument. Follow these four pillars of maintenance to ensure it keeps working and stays accurate for years to come.
1. Daily cleaning
The outer surface of the scale is made of tempered glass, meaning it is designed for quick cleanup.
The method: Use a damp (not dripping) microfiber cloth to wipe away coffee grounds or spills. Then, wipe the scale with a dry towel to make sure that the buttons are bone dry. This way, you can avoid ghost taps from the moisture.
The rule: Never submerge the scale in water or place it in a dishwasher.
2. The magnetic USB port
The charging interface is highly moisture-tolerant, but "tolerant" doesn't mean waterproof.
Stay dry: Ensure the magnetic port is dry before attaching the charging cable.
Emergency protocol: If liquid gets inside the port, disconnect power immediately. Let it air dry completely to prevent oxidation (rusting) of the contact points.
3. Moisture & internal integrity
The internal circuit boards (PCBs) have a protective coating, but direct liquid ingress should still be avoided.
If a major spill occurs:
1. Wipe the exterior bone-dry immediately.
2. Place the scale in a well-ventilated area.
3. Wait 24 hours before turning it back on to ensure any internal vapor has evaporated.
4. Protecting the load cell
The load cell is the "brain" that measures weight. While it handles humidity well, direct saturation (soaking) can drift your calibration.
Avoid "steady streams": Don't let water pool under the chassis or sit directly against the internal sensors.
Stable calibration: Keep the scale on a flat, dry surface when not in use to maintain sensor health.
Pro Tip: Oxidation is the silent killer of electronics. A quick 5-second wipe after your morning brew session is the best way to prevent long-term damage to the magnetic charging pins.
