Here is a 360º video of sculptural metal “wings” body we made for our upcoming Bengle espresso machine.
Keen eyes will notice two blotches on both sides, near the mounting bolt, as well as some smushed metal ripples. Those are caused by the manufacturing process.
A computer controlled drill makes this design (it takes a long time!) on a flat sheet of metal. That piece is then hand bent around a form, and it's during the bending that the damage takes place. In our next prototype iteration, we're making a foamed covered bending form, to try to bend the metal without causing any damage to the sculptural surface. Nobody said this was going to be easy!
People asked what the back side looked like, and now you can see that the design wraps around. In this prototype there's a vertical line visible, but that won't be in the final manufactured part. Our CNC machine for making this prototype wasn't big enough to do this in one pass, which is what caused the line.
The other two ideas we tried (“stone” and brushed steel) are also on this video.
